바토우카운티 킹스턴서 연 35GWh 생산…전기차 30만대 배터리 공급 능력
현대자동차그룹과 SK온의 미국 배터리 합작법인이 공식 사명을 확정하고 본격 출범 채비를 마쳤다.
양사는 26일 합작법인의 공식 사명을 ‘HSBMA(Hyundai SK Battery Manufacturing America)’로 확정했다고 밝혔다. 임시 사명인 HSAGP에서 변경된 것으로 2023년 4월 합작법인 설립 발표 이후 3년 만이다.
HSBMA 공장은 조지아주 바토우 카운티 킹스턴(Kingston) 411번 하이웨이 인근에 위치한다. 현재 공사 진행률이 90% 이상으로 올해 안에 상업 생산을 시작할 계획이다.
양사가 각각 50% 지분으로 약 50억 달러를 공동 투자한 이 시설은 완공 시 연간 35GWh 규모의 배터리 셀 생산 능력을 갖추게 된다. 전기차 약 30만대에 공급할 수 있는 수준이다.
HSBMA에서 생산된 배터리 셀은 현대모비스가 배터리팩으로 조립한 뒤 현대차·기아·제네시스 전기차에 탑재된다. 배터리 셀부터 팩, 완성차까지 이어지는 수직계열화 구조를 미국 현지에 구축하는 셈이다.
HSBMA의 위치는 전략적이다. 조지아주 브라이언 카운티의 현대차그룹 메타플랜트 아메리카(HMGMA), 기아 조지아 공장, 앨라배마 현대차 공장과 가까워 물류 비용 절감과 배터리 수급 안정성을 동시에 확보할 수 있다.
SK온은 이미 아이오닉5, EV6, EV9, GV60 등 현대차그룹 주요 전기차 모델에 배터리를 공급해온 검증된 파트너다. 합작법인 생산이 본격화되면 시너지는 더욱 커질 전망이다.
SK온은 HSBMA 외에도 조지아주 커머스의 SK배터리아메리카(22GWh) 공장을 이미 운영 중이다. 여기에 HSBMA(35GWh)가 올해 가동되고 테네시의 블루오벌 SK 공장(45GWh)이 포드와의 합작에서 단독 시설로 전환될 경우 SK온의 북미 배터리 생산 역량은 대폭 강화된다.
