A semi-underground warehouse has transformed into a local hot spot in downtown Duluth
A Korean-American couple’s unwavering love for their community now manifests in coffee and connection.

“Beyond Boundaries – The Alchemy of a Cup of Coffee”
In the classic film Dead Poets Society, John Keating, a passionate teacher, inspires his students with the Latin phrase Carpe Diem—seize the day. Encouraging them to break free from conventional norms, he instills the value of poetry, literature, and free thinking.
Following his guidance, the students revive the secret club Dead Poets Society, gathering in caves late at night to recite poetry and seek deeper meaning in their lives.
Similarly, a new café in downtown Duluth has become a modern-day gathering place—a sanctuary for coffee lovers, local artists, entrepreneurs, public officials, and everyday residents. The café, Alchemist on the Divide, has captured the community’s heart even before its grand opening.
We visited this fast-growing sensation to uncover what makes it so special.

“We Wished for a Great Café” – A Dream Turned Reality
Michael and Sarah Park, longtime Duluth residents, had always dreamed of having a perfect neighborhood café.
With the city hall relocating and downtown undergoing redevelopment, new businesses flourished, yet there was still no true gathering space for locals.
Then, the couple stumbled upon an abandoned semi-underground space beneath the old city hall.
Teaming up with Alchemist Trading Co., a beloved café in Johns Creek, they decided to bring their own version of the concept to Duluth.
The space had a rich history—it had once housed the city hall, police station, and jail, and even earlier, it had been home to Duluth First Baptist Church.
To preserve its legacy, they kept the building’s original structure, blending historic and modern elements.
- Rail tracks were embedded in the flooring, a nod to Duluth’s railroad history.
- Vintage pipes and columns remained intact, celebrating the space’s industrial past.
- The cozy underground atmosphere was enhanced to create a cave-like sanctuary—perfect for literary discussions, creative meetups, and intimate coffee moments.

“On the Divide” – A Place That Bridges Communities
The word “Alchemist” refers to a practitioner of alchemy, the medieval art of transforming base metals into gold using sacred ingredients, natural elements, and mystical stones.
However, for Eric Oh and his wife, the founders of Alchemist Trading Co., alchemy is more than just a historical experiment. Their philosophy revolves around creating the perfect golden ratio of pure, organic ingredients to craft beverages of unparalleled taste. More importantly, their ultimate goal is to cultivate an environment where every moment spent sipping coffee and conversing becomes a golden experience—a precious moment worth cherishing.
Building on this vision, they introduced Alchemist on the Divide, the second branch of their café, seamlessly blending Duluth’s dynamic energy, diverse cultures, and ongoing redevelopment efforts. This location has transformed into a true gem for the local community, embodying both the artistry of alchemy and the power of human connection.
But what about “On the Divide”?
Sarah Park explains:
“Our café sits on a geographical divide—a ridge where rainwater flows east to the Atlantic or west to the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a natural boundary, yet it connects vast landscapes.”
The word “divide” can mean separation, but also a point of convergence—and that’s exactly what this café has become.
Sarah and Michael Park also credit their journey into the café business to an invaluable connection—their partnership with the owners of the original Alchemist Trading Co.. This meeting became the catalyst for their new venture, and they express deep gratitude for the relationships that have shaped their path.
Thus, Alchemist on the Divide is more than just a coffee shop—it is a space where conversations flow freely, cultures blend harmoniously, and meaningful connections are made every day.

Not Just a Café – A Home for the Community
Alchemist on the Divide isn’t just a trendy café—it’s a social hub deeply rooted in the community.
Michael and Sarah have been actively involved in Gwinnett County and the Korean-American community for over a decade.
- Sarah Park currently serves as the Public Affairs Secretary for Gwinnett County, actively participating in organizations like KAC (Korean American Coalition).
- Michael Park has held positions as a Gwinnett County Urban Planning Committee member and the President of the Korean American Foundation, Atlanta Chapter.
Given their deep-rooted commitment to the community, this café was never just about business—it was about creating a space where people could connect, share stories, and build relationships.
In its first week alone, Alchemist on the Divide matched the explosive sales success of its flagship location. However, its greatest success isn’t in numbers—it’s in the stories that unfold within its walls.
According to Sarah, many of the café’s visitors are long-time Duluth residents who hold deep sentimental ties to this historic location.
“Many customers tell us, ‘I used to come here for Bible study,’ or ‘I had to visit this building for court-related matters years ago,’” Sarah shares.
“There are deep-rooted memories here, and we wanted to honor that history.”
Understanding the historical and emotional significance of this space, Sarah and Michael saw an opportunity to preserve its legacy while transforming it into a community hub.
Looking ahead, they hope to host a variety of events, connect individuals and organizations, and serve as a bridge between local businesses and cultural initiatives—continuing to build a space where history, community, and great coffee come together.

“We Have Over 100 Mayors in Duluth!”
After the interview, Sarah Park picked up a piece of litter near the sidewalk as she escorted the reporter out.
When jokingly asked, “Are you the mayor of Duluth?”, she laughed and replied:
“There are over 100 mayors in this town! Everyone takes ownership, loves, and cares for their community.”
That’s the essence of Alchemist on the Divide—a café that’s more than just a business.
It’s a place where locals gather, share their lives, and take pride in their neighborhood.
